Michael Murphy is a Laguna Beach police detective investigating the disappearance of Roger Anderson, a man with a criminal history who, with his unhappy wife, Melissa, live in a mansion. During his investigation, Murphy becomes involved with Melissa, which is complicated by the return of her husband. Fearing arrest and imprisonment, Roger Anderson takes off again and is found a few days later washed up on a beach with two bullet holes in the back of his head. Murphy tries to hide his continued involvement with the widow Anderson while working to find out who killed her husband. Complicating his life is Detective Vega, assigned to lead the investigation, Murphy's captain, who has a dislike for him, and an officer from Internal Affairs who is determined to destroy Murphy's career.
